GREek Translations from Latin
GRETL is an extensive and growing database of Latin terminology as translated in Greek sources. It can be searched by Latin or Greek keyword.
The database is being compiled by Bradley Buszard, Professor of Classics at Christopher Newport University, as the raw material for a comprehensive study of the translation and adaptation of Latin vocabulary in the surviving Greek historiography on Rome. It comprises inter alia translations concerning the Roman army, Roman religion, politics, social institutions, names, finance, and law.
The records within the database will provide the raw material for a series of printed topical monographs, the first of which has been published:
- Buszard, Bradley. Greek Translations of Roman Gods. Berlin and Boston (Mass.): De Gruyter, 2023.
It is hoped that ready access to the raw data will be also helpful to scholars and students of Rome, of the Greeks living under Roman rule, and of the complex relations between the two cultures.
